Condition Description: Bright scarlet hardcover leather book with gilt lettering and Marine Corps insignia on front cover. The head and base of spine are chipped as well as bottom corner of the front. Red and white headband is visible. Previous book owner's name written on the page edges in blue ink; "Yaccarino." No other writing found during a quick scan. Small black blemish on rear cover. Slight yellowing to page edges due to normal aging. Slight musty smell but it is no where near overwhelming. 


The textbook is addressed to students beginning their second year in a Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Program. Part One (111 pages) discusses psychology, group dynamics, human relations skills, communication skills, military instruction, and problem solving as they apply to a leader. Also discussed are leadership principles, indicators of leadership, and the role of the officer. The second part, Military Orientation and Organization, describes the organization of the Marine Corps including Marine aviation, the Interior Guard, and Military Police. The military-related skills of land navigation and orienteering (a combination of cross-country running and a land navigation) are explained. Part Three contains background information related to drill and associated ceremonies. The last part presents a basic understanding of the operation of the M-14 rifle and the sidearm (.45 pistol). Study questions conclude most of the chapters and a bilbiography is included for each of the four parts. (Author/MS)


From the professional library of Major "Pat" Yaccarino, USMC, Retired. Major Yaccarino honorable served from 1964-1984. His initial Vietnam combat tour was from June 1966 to July 1967 with the 1st Military Police Battalion, Fleet Marine Forces, Da Nang, Republic of  Vietnam. There primary mission was to defend Da Nang Airbase, the city of Da Nang and southeast to China Beach. In 1970, then Captain Yaccarino returned to Vietnam and joined 1st Battalion, 9th Marines. After returning to the United States Captain Yaccarino served in numerous command and staff positions within the Marine Corps too include Detroit, Michigan as an Inspector Instructor and Quantico where he was Company Commander, Battalion Operations Officer and Battalion Executive Officer in a Weapons Training Battalion. In 1979, his final assignment was in Okinawa, Japan as embarkation officer and working with Korean Marines in Team Spirit exercises. In 1982 he returned to Virginia Beach where he retired in 1984 and began a 26 year career in the Hampton Roads maritime service unloading and loading cargo and container ships retiring in 2012.
