Rechtzeitig zum 50. Geburtstag des US-Multi-Musikers Steve Miller legt das Edel-Label DCC eine 24-Karat-Goldedition seines platin-veredelten Millionen-Sellers auf. Eine gleich in doppelter Hinsicht lohnende Entscheidung: Zum einen glänzt die Scheibe mit durchweg hochkarätigen Songs, darunter drei Top-twenty-Hits (Take The Money And Run, Rock'n Me und der Titelsong), zum anderen befreiten die kalifornischen Klangspezialisten die immerhin 17 Jahre alte Aufnahme von ihrem Muff, so daß Millers spaciger Stereo-Sound anno 1993 wieder voll anmacht.

Steve Millers mit Abstand erfolgreichstes Album lieferte 1976 die Hitsingles "Take The Money And Run", "Rock 'n Me" und "Fly Like An Eagle" und stellte für alle nachfolgenden Aufnahmen des Amerikaners die Blaupause dar - auch bei seiner neuesten Platte "Wide River" griff Miller auf diese Quelle zurück. 1979 machte eine im Halfspeed-Verfahren gefertigte Vinylüberspielung (MFSL 1-021) des "Fly Like An Eagle"-Masters unter HiFi- Enthusiasten Furore, und diese LP muß auch heute noch als klangtechnische Referenz gelten. Steve Hoffmans Überspielung auf Gold-CD betont im Vergleich dazu Millers Gesang, erreicht aber nicht dieselbe Prägnanz im Tieftonbereich.

Steve Miller had started to essay his classic sound with The Joker, but 1976's Fly Like an Eagle is where he took flight, creating his definitive slice of space blues. The key is focus, even on an album as stylishly, self-consciously trippy as this, since the focus brings about his strongest set of songs (both originals and covers), plus a detailed atmospheric production where everything fits. It still can sound fairly dated — those whooshing keyboards and cavernous echoes are certainly of their time — but its essence hasn't aged, as "Fly Like an Eagle" drifts like a cool breeze, while "Take the Money and Run" and "Rock 'n Me" are fiendishly hooky, friendly rockers. The rest of the album may not be quite up to those standards, but there aren't any duds, either, as "Wild Mountain Honey" and "Mercury Blues" give this a comfortable backdrop, thanks to Miller's offhand, lazy charm. Though it may not quite transcend its time, it certainly is an album rock landmark of the mid-'70s and its best moments (namely, the aforementioned singles) are classics of the idiom.
