Antique Chinese Blue and White Porcelain Lidded Jar, Late Qing Period.

Description: Fine Chinese Qing Dynasty Porcelain Lidded Jar, delicately hand-painted in shades of underglazed blue on a white ground, beautifully decorated in traditional Chinese taste, depicting a well painted figural scene of the female Bodhisattva 'Xi Wangmu', the Queen Mother of the West, riding a mythological animal, half dragon, half beast, while accompanied by her attendants, each pursuing activities, in a landscape setting of pine branches. A motif of informal key patterns accent the shoulders of the jar, and a large artemisia leaf crowns the lid.
xxxxx: In Chinese Buddhism, Xi wangmu is the Dragon King's daughter, the divine Goddess of Immortality, the most popular female deity in the pantheon of Taoist religion, portrayed as a humanoid with a Leopard's tail. She is identified in this scene as a young female wearing a circular headdress atop her head, dressed in court attire, holding an Artemisia branch emblem with her right hand, as she sits on a dragon headed mythical Beast Throne in a frontal posture, while attendants hold parasol umbrellas about her in passing.
xxxxx: Meticulously potted, the paste of the porcelain is finely molded in a smooth moderately thin wall of globular shape, formed with a short neck, broad shoulders sloped gradually to a bulbous body, narrowing to a flat footrim, concaved at the bottom.
xxxxx: The condition of the Jar is virtually perfect, with only minor indiscernible indications of normal wear, without clips, cracks, or repairs. Typical of hand-crafted porcelain, there are a few normal potter blemishes, and kiln production blemishes, including warts, dimples, zits, pits, and small glaze fractures on the interior /exterior walls.
xxxxx: Overall it's an exceptionally attractive piece and a extraordinarily well preserved specimen of Chinese Porcelain Art.

Conservatively Dated: Probably Late Qing Dynasty (1875-1916) - or possibly earlier.
