'Pencil Ore' Hematite (Haematite) Fe2O3

Cumbria, UK.

'Pencil Ore' is a variety of Hematite consisting of hard, almost parallel fibrous crystals, the regularity of which allows it to be split into thin tapering rods, like a pencil lead. These were used by masons to mark stone blocks, the Hematite leaving a red mark scratched into the surface of the stone. Hematite is an Iron Oxide and the principal ore of Iron. The name is derived from the Greek for blood, relating to the red oxide coating that can form on unpolished specimens.
