This iconic, "Good Luck" totem pole was carved by Eli Tait in Metlakatla, Alaska around the middle of the 20th century. It was signed on the back, but the ink is now faded almost to invisibility (according to experts on Mr Tait’s work, this is very common, especially on the earliest examples). There is also an stamped notation on the bottom identifying it as authentic Alaska Native art (see photo). I encourage you to do an internet search using the words Early Totem Carvers of New Metlakatla, for an interesting and educational discussion of this artist. This piece measures 7.5" tall and is in wonderful condition. QUESTIONS? ALWAYS EMAIL BEFORE BIDDING. SEE MY AUCTIONS FOR JEWELRY, ANTIQUES AND INTERESTING COLLECTIBLES.
