- Despite the enormous advances in digital music technology, it's almost impossible to convincingly recreate the sound and the feel of soul music from America's deep south. Its raw human spirit and earthy down-home feel is not easily defined and is even more difficult to emulate.
Southern Fried Funk (GVCD 3031) contains 22 tracks from New Orleans and the deep south. Many tracks have already been sampled while others are crying out to be sampled.
Thanks to the technology of sampling, the rise of hip-hop and the development of the 'deep funk' scene, many lesser-known artists finally received belated and unexpected attention - or at least their beats did. The drum is everything.
Allen Toussaint opens the album with 'Get Out Of My Life Woman'. Lee Dorsey's version has been sampled more often but Dorsey is featured with 'Everything I Do Gonh Be Funky (From Now On)'.
Also from New Orleans are obscure tracks by Warren Lee, Eldridge Holmes and Diamond Joe plus rare Eddie Bo productions by Chuck Carbo, The Explosions and David Robinson.
David Batiste & The Gladiators offer the classic 'Funky Soul' and the previously unissued 'Funky Hips'.
From Muscle Shoals we have two cuts by Z.Z. Hill and two each from lesser-known names Tony Borders and Eddie Bradford. Also cut at the Shoals was the obscure 'Real Soul' by Ted Ford.
'Make It Real (Ride On)' by Betty Adams has been popular since its discovery by DJ David Holmes (Ministry of Sound) and 'Milk' by The Basic was discovered by DJ Shadow before it was reissued on Jazzman. 'I Tried It And I Liked It' by Jewel Bass is a rare Malaco track from 1973.
Southern Fried Funk isn't just for soul and funk fans, it's also a great tool for hip-hop, rap and drum 'n' bass producers.
