TREASURES OF THE WORLD:

GARNET - EUROPE

$1, 1 Oz, Pure 99.99% Silver Locket Coin with Red Garnet

Treasures of the World is a beautiful new collector series of locket coins from Perth Mint celebrating an abundance of natural riches found across the globe.  To showcase a selection of the Earth’s most cherished gems, five individual 1 Oz coins will feature in the series, which will be released across five years (2013-2017), one coin each year.

Garnet is a gemstone that has been known to humankind for thousands of years. It has been found in Bronze Age jewelry, attesting to its early recognition and use. According to legend, Noah used a garnet lantern to help him steer his ark through the dark of night. Many early travelers liked to carry a garnet with them, as it was thought to be a protective stone. Classic garnet is red in color and the stones are believed to symbolize passion, fidelity, loyalty, faith and truth, and an ancient symbol of true friendship. Red garnet is also the birthstone for the month of January.

Significant deposits of garnet have been found in Europe, particularly in areas of Czechoslovakia, famous for the Bohemian variety. Red garnets were the most commonly used gemstones in the Roman world, and the Migration Period art of the "barbarian" peoples who took over the territory of the Western Roman Empire. They were especially used inlaid in gold cells in the cloisonné technique, a style often just called garnet cloisonné, found from Anglo-Saxon England to the Black Sea. Garnet types are found in many colors besides red, including orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, brown, black, pink and colorless. The rarest of these is the blue garnet, discovered in the late 1990s. The garnet became extremely fashionable during the Victorian era. Due to the gem’s sparkle and refractive qualities, this lovely stone remains one of the most popular jewelry stones today.
