Original Ray-Ban – The full story
Bausch & Lomb were commissioned in 1937 by the US government to design and manufacturer protective eyewear suitable for aviation pilots to shield their eyes from prolonged exposure to light.
Bausch & Lomb came up with a durable, lightweight stylish design with superior eye protection – Enter the Ray Ban Aviator G-15 (seen in movies like Top-Gun with Tom Cruise).
The Aviator and Ray-Ban became a fashion statement and changed the way the world looked through sunglasses. They became an icon donned by movie stars and celebrities worldwide.
It’s no secret Bausch & Lomb sold Ray-Ban to Italian sunglass giant Luxottica in 1999 for about $640 million.
Not so well known is that Luxottica is the largest eyewear company in the world – it owns the whole distribution channel, from the wholesale warehouse to the retail outlet. Most likely owns the local retailer you buy your glasses from. One stock market blogger described Luxottica as a ‘beast & borderline monopoly for glasses, prescription & designer’.
Unfortunately new Ray-Ban glasses have no connection to the founders of the brand.

What is the condition/age of these vintage glasses?
- The glasses are New Old Stock and have not been worn, so they are in excellent condition. The original box packaging might have some signs of storing.
- Since 1981 a white Ray-Ban logo was printed on the right lens. So each piece with no logo and with "BL" etched on both lenses was produced in the 1970's. That means they are about 30 years old.
