A great example of a fan-tail folding brass fire screen.

The screen has signs of aging and long-term use with some dulling to the brass and and a minor marks and speckling here and there.  It will polish up but I think it looks great as it is.

It is good condition.  It folds and unfolds fairly easily. When folded it is held in place by 2 small clips at the top of the frame. All the individual pierced brass "feathers" are nice and flat with no kinks or bends. The feet are sound and it is stable.  The griffins to the front and rear both have their chin-straps intact.

Please note whilst this will provide some protection against sparks it is not a child fire safety guard as the feet are quite narrow compared to the width of the fan.  This is decorative screen designed to stand in front of the fireplace.

I do not know the exact age but the design dates to the 1920s when folding fan fire-screens of this type were popular. I believe the figure at the base is in fact a griffin but fire screens of this type are more commonly referred to as peacock or phoenix screens.

It measures about 96 x 62.5 x 10 (37.75 x 24.5 x 4 inches) when extended.  It has footprint of about 21 x 10 cm (8.5 x 4 inches) when folded.

It weighs about 4046g  (8lbs 15ozs)

This piece will look great in a Victorian / Edwardian or early 20th Century house
