Notes adapted from online sources: A meerschaum pipe is a smoking pipe made from the mineral sepiolite. Meerschaum is German for foam of the sea; sepiolite is found floating on the Black Sea and is suggestive of sea foam - hence the German origin of the name, as well as the French name for the same substance, écume de mer. One of the most porous substances found in nature, meerschaum acts as a filter, absorbing tobacco tars and nicotine and yielding a satisfying smoke. As it ages, the color deepens to a rich honey-brown, improving in appearance and in taste. With a minimum of care, a meerschaum pipe will last a lifetime.
