Burma (Myanmar)  Copper 1/4 Pe or 1/4 Anna KM 25.1 struck 1878 (Burma date 1240) with vertical petals.  Purchased in January 1972 in England.

These coins are fairly common in Burma because they are copper.  Obsolete silver and gold coins got melted down.  But they are usually very worn and often struck with worn out dies.  The nicest ones come from England where they were carried back by English administrators or English business men.

This coin is weakly struck on the bottom but has sharp detail on the chinthe (lion-dragon).  It is the vertical petal variety.  The other variety has the petals on the diagonal.

I saw dozens of these copper 1/4 anna chinthe and peacock but only found one nice one as most were really worn.

From 1985 to 2013 I visited Burma twenty two times and bought Burma coins whenever I saw them.  Back then Burma only received about 30,000 tourists per year.  Now the number visiting is in the millions.  Over the years I bought a number of scarcer, nice Burma coins.  Last week a Burmese dealer visited me wanting to buy back the coins he had sold me because they have gone up so much and there just isn't a supply now in Burma.  My wife has told me to sell all so she won't have to deal with them.
