New Hoya 62mm CPL

Polarizers are filters with adjustable, rotating mounts that deepen the intensity of sunny blue skies, increase color saturation, reduce glare and reflections on non-metal surfaces i.e. water, glass, snow and sand. Two types of Polarizer are Circular CPL and Linear PL. This listed made in Japan Circular Polarizer has an aluminum frame with threads on each side. It is not necessary to buy the more expensive multi-coated polarizers filters; the performance difference of 1/20th  f-stop is negligible and you will not see it. The most important thing with a polarizer is determining which one your camera requires.

How to Tell

Circular Polarizers are required for many film based cameras SLRs Single Lens Reflex and their cousin the DSLR Digital Single Lens Reflex . These cameras employ a mirror to display the image in the viewfinder which flips up during image capture.  They usually have interchangeable lenses and a term commonly associated with these products is TTL or through the lens. Therefore cameras with terms like TTL SLR and DSLR require CPL Circular Polarizers. If these terms are associated with your camera then you are responding to the correct ad. Want this capability for less money we also have this filter available in a Hoya G series.

If your camera has a non-interchangeable lens a Parallel or EVF viewfinder, your camera can use a Linear Polarizer (PL). Viewfinders called Parallel or Parallax have one or more view holes / squares visible on the camera front.  A quick test for this type is to cover the lens and look into the viewfinder if you can see it is parallel and can use a PL. The other type is an electronic viewfinder EVF found on some Digital cameras.  EVFs display electronically created images on an internal LCD screen or on the camera back. An easy test is to look into the viewfinder or on the back LCD, with the camera off.  If it is dark, it is an EVF.  Therefore, cameras with terms like EVF, Parallel / Parallax, and non-interchangeable lenses, can use a Linear Polarizer PL get better results and save you money.  Please bid on our 62mm Linear Polarizer product.

Usage Tips

The most effective camera polarizer position is having the side of you face directed toward the sun and the camera directed 90 degrees from that direction. Gradual turning in either direction will have a gradual loss of effectiveness and none when you reach 180 degrees. Here is a little secret. Linear polarizes are slightly more effect then Circular polarizer as the photographer approaches 180 degrees.

Finding the maximum polarization filter position is not difficult. All polarizers have a rotating front ring to increase or reduce their effect. It’s impossible to engineer a polarizer to fit all cameras exactly the same so the camera user needs to understand how the filter behaves on their camera. The filter has one white marker on the outside ring. The easiest way to find the ring / white marker positions of minimum and maximum is to aim and focus the camera on a reflection in a glass pane. You will easily see the reflection appear and disappear with front ring rotation. Remember polarization occurs within at 45 degree arc not 360 there are two ring maximum positions. Once you have viewed the min max positions you can either remember them or place a small white nail polish dot on the rear ring’s maximum position(s).

When screwing on a polarizer gently hold both ring sections between the thumb and forefinger and screw on clockwise. Stop as soon as your fingers begin to slide on the front ring. This will ensure that the filter stays loose. When using the polarizer always rotate the front ring in the same clockwise direction, this insures that the filter stays on.

Polarizer filters have a tendency to stick on lenses and adapter. They are not really stuck it is sometimes difficult to grab the rear portion without grabbing the front. Try this next time you have a panic attack. Grab the entire unit as if were one piece and gently rock it side to side. Now let go. Now try unscrewing the unit as before.

Lens and filter cleaning tip

Buy a small bottle of Isopropyl rubbing Alcohol 70% by volume. Leave the seal on and puncture a small hole in the center. This will insure that the content stays clear of contamination. Take a piece of paper towel and tear off a (2" x 2") 50mm X 50mm square in one corner. Sprinkle a few drops of Alcohol on the little square paper, not the element, and squeeze out any excess fluid. Now rub the surface of the filter or lens with the wet towel. Do not be concerned with the wet rainbow effect it will disappear. Before the surface is completely dry rub with the remaining paper towel and finish off, if necessary with a lens cloth. You lens will sparkle and your lens cloth will stay clean. Some people have reported that Isopropyl rubbing Alcohol 70% by volume is available in wet packets. Just make sure that there are no additional ingredients in the solution.
