ROCK OF AGES by August Montague Toplady Published 1879

I am liquidating my grandfather's book collection, his library as he thought of it.   These books have been in the family for over one hundred years, and I have had them stored for almost forty.  I always thought that I would have the time and the place to treasure them, but I recognize that it is a burden I don't have the luxury of carrying.   If you are lucky and find value in such things, then I will pass the torch to you, recognizing that the money you pay is the token of your sincerity and desire, not just me converting Granddad's books to cash, which I can more easily store.   My best wishes for your success.

This is a small hard cover book measuring 7.5 inches high by 6.25 inches wide and 0.5 inches thick, of which half is the cover boards and half is the pages.  There are twenty pages cover to cover.  The material is a heavy vellum or cover stock to use modern terms, such as would be used for a quality business card that had pluck when you flicked the edge.  This is probably a 60 to 80 pound paper.   The top, front, and bottom edges of the pages are gold gilt surfaced.   The pages themselves are electrotype printed [according to the publishers inside page] and are one sided with either print or illustrations on only the right hand side.   Each of the pages would be suitable for framing as individual prints in another context, although that would destroy the book.

The hard cover as shown in the images is covered with a very fine count woven fabric which could be a cotton weave or possibly a silk fabric.  I'm not that smart, but it feels very soft and smooth to the touch.  The binding is still sound, as the pages are threaded and sewn in gathers that can be seen from the ends of the binding at top and bottom.  The edges of the cover are beveled slightly, and the cover extends an eighth of an inch beyond the pages, which has protected the gilt edges very well.  In that the book has been stored for the last forty years, and seen no wear and tear for me, I can only guess that the book did at one time spend time where it was in use in the household.

The cover shows  some wear and the fabric shows some polish and shine.  There are some small discolorations and stains on the cover which probably mean that at some time the book had the good fortune to be used and enjoyed.  I have made no effort to clean it, nor would I ever with an elder book such as this.    Old things come with baggage and that's just the way it is.

Shipping Expense will be subject to where you are as the buyer.   When you tell me where it has to go, I will let you know what the expense will be.   Minimum requirements will be for secure, tracking enabled and preferably second day delivery at a minimum.   Non tracking method will not be used.

I look forward to passing the torch and welcome your questions as may be the case.
