The abarcas menorquinas are traditional shoes of Menorca, Spain.
In the old days they were the shoes worn by the rural inhabitants of the island because they were strong and easily adaptable to the country fields. They were made using cattle fur and when vehicles where invented, then the sole was made with recycled car tyre.
Nowadays there are abarcas menorquinas (sandals) of a great range of colours and designs. They are now made using cattle fur or leather, but they can also be made using grass fabrics, cloths or raffia; the sole is made in the style of a car tyre but from a purpose made mould. Nevertheless they are all handcrafted. The size start at 18 (2 in the UK) for children and end at 44 (10 in the UK) for adults. The little ones have a micro porous sole to be lighter.
These last years the popularity of the abarcas menorquinas (sandals) has risen considerably because they are resistant, light and confortable shoes. The popularity has also arisen many imitations. In order to fight against them, the local government (Consell Insular) and the shoemaker association (AsociaciĆ³n de Fabricantes de Calzado de Menorca) have developed the sign Product of Menorca to protect the traditional abarca handcrafted in the island.
Even the Royal Family from Spain has been seen wearing Abarcas.
