Bonos pretty legit though: "Here we are, fat cats in the snow," said the illimitable rock star to a coterie of mega-corp leaders who had gathered on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum. One can only imagine the seraphic U2 singer had his tongue planted firmly in cheek--the lusty-lunged warbler was in Davos to launch a new global brand, Product Red, a portion of whose profits will help the fight against AIDS in Africa.

He has got some heavyweight launch partners, too: American Express, Gap, Nike, Converse and Giorgio Armani announced a range of "red" branded products, including t-shirts, footwear, sunglasses and a credit card. Product Red hopes to use the branding expertise and commercial clout of its corporate partners to make money for the Global Fund to Fight Aids, TB and Malaria.

This is not one of your namby-pamby New Age handouts, warned Bono. "Philanthropy is like hippie music, holding hands. Red is more like punk rock, hip hop, this should feel like hard commerce," he analogized.
