Welcome to the innovative Geometry in Art Program, the popular new series of spectacular, one troy ounce pure silver proof-finish coins from the Royal Canadian Mint. The goal of the Geometry in Art Program is to put a new take on the familiar designs of Canada's circulating coinage. As digital artists seek to recreate the physical world through dimensional images, modeling techniques based on geometric shapes have given way to a new visual style, called low poly art. This eye-catching series utilizes this art style to present a contemporary spin on and highly artistic interpretation of  five of Canada’s most famous icons, taken from its legal tender denominations:

    #1 Loon
    #2 Polar Bear
    #3 Caribou
    #4 Beaver
    #5 Maple Leaf

Geometry #2 - Polar BearThis ingenious coin design brings together a mass of polygons to create a captivating image of a mother polar bear and her cub. Known as “low poly” art, this geometric technique has been merged with outstanding sculpting, cutting-edge technology and advanced finishing techniques. The result? A stunning design with exceptional relief that defines every polygon, and rich, bold colors that bring depth, dimension and a powerful sense of shadow and light to the scene. Breathtaking use of colour furthers the design. In keeping with the low poly art style, lustrous colors contribute to the perception of depth and shadows. The varying shades of blue and white also help convey the icy feel of the Arctic setting, providing yet another dynamic visual element to the scene.

An Original Work of Art!
The design by Canadian artist Calder Moore features a stylized portrait of “King of the Arctic” and beloved representative of Canada’s North, the mighty polar bear (Ursus maritimus). Geometry, technology and art intersect as the entirety of the image is presented in a low poly art style; multiple polygon shapes come together to form a mother bear (left) and her cub (right), with each shape made distinct from the other through extraordinary sculpting, cutting-edge technology and advanced finishing techniques. Together, they form a touching scene of this iconic species as a mother bear introduces her cub to Canada’s Arctic waters. Gracefully swimming out, the mother turns to face her young as he gingerly attempts his first few strokes. The hard edges that are characteristic of this style lend themselves beautifully to recreating the Arctic ice above and below the water’s surface. Yet it is the application of rich, vibrant colors that brings a dynamic quality to the overall design, infusing it with depth and dimension through different shades of blues and whites which create a playful perception of shadow and light.

Technology Note - Color
The Royal Canadian Mint leads the world with its proprietary colorization technology, in which the color is actually sealed on the coin. The intricate detail, smooth gradients, and extreme precision of the technology create a stunning look on each coin.
