Henry Roderick Newman[American, 1833-1918]

Born in Easton, New York, Henry Roderick Newman was a Pre-Raphaelite landscape and still-life painter, who moved with his family to New York City in 1843. He established himself as one of the most important American watercolorists of his day. His specialty subjects were religious architectural structures, floral pictures, and views of endangered historical landmarks. His paintings, especially the architectural subjects, can bring substantial amounts at auction, as can be seen below.

Offered here is a beautiful example of one of Newman’s floral works. This antique watercolor shows the subtle shadings, detail and luminosity for which the artist is well known. There is some evidence of foxing, mainly in the upper portion. The circular painting is laid down on stiff artist board. It has a thick matting with a circular cut-out window over it. The top matting has extensive staining, which does not affect the artwork. Overall, the 113 year-old painting is in very good/excellent condition, aside from the aforementioned foxing.
