These bronze busts depicting Ajax and Philopoemen were exceptionally sculpted, patinated and partially gilt, and finely mounted upon black slate pedestals with incised, painted decorations in the Eastlake style, circa 1890s.  Measures: 21 x 6 x 6 in; 53 x 15 x 15 cm.  

Philopoemen (253-183 BC) was a statesman and successful general, having served as Achaean Strategos and a leading figure in the rise of the Achaean League in Greece.  In Greek mythology, Ajax was a warrior considered the strongest of the Achaeans.  He played an important role in the Iliad by Homer.
