This fabric features ikat-woven stripes, accented with narrow bands of tiny, jacquard-woven checks.

This fabric is brand new, not "vintage." In other words, it's not used, damaged, or dirty. It is, however, folk art. Because of the way it's produced, there may be occasional, small irregularities in the weave. |

Ikat is a dyeing and weaving technique that has been practiced in traditional cultures in many parts of the world. It is distinguished by the fact that the threads are dyed before the fabric is woven. As a result, the edges of the design's motifs have a characteristic blurred appearance. Weaving is done by hand and requires skill to maintain the pattern's register.

This is a light weight fabric with a large number of small warp and weft threads. This allows for the fine, detailed design that is typical of the ikats from the Indian state of Orisssa. But it makes the ikat process particularly time consuming. Consequently this fabric is more costly than some of our heavier ikats.
