Flat Tanpuri is an instrumental Tanpura. It's a piece of excellent craftsmanship and uses finest materials. It has a rounded & sustained sound, with a richness in overtones that is so typical for this Tanpura variant. The varnishing of the Tanpura is done nearly without pigments in order to show the natural grain of the wood to its better advantage. The keynote can be tuned to c – d.
This instrumental Tanpura is about 100 cm in length and is stringed with 4 thin steel strings. It has a flat wooden sound box and neck. The sound can be described as clear and silvery. The characteristic tuning of an instrumental Tanpura is around c (c - d). Instrumental Tanpuras are used in Indian music e.g. at Sarod or Sitar concerts.
The richness in overtones is closely related to the position of the threads which are squeezed in between bridge and strings. The position of the threads changes the bearing angle between strings and bridge and so influences a strong or less strong vibrating/twanging which is responsible for the richness in overtones. If you would like to maintain or change the richness in overtones, you should newly adjust these threads every once in a while in order to keep your favourite sound pattern. This may be necessary with every new tuning of the instrument.
This Tanpuri is made my Manu ji - our master string craftsman. He pays full attention to good craftsmanship and the sound quality of every single instrument. This Tanpuri also features tasteful inlay work.
