Antique Cameo Brooch / Pendant……..

This is such a well done Cameo – fabulous detail and very crisp.

The subject matter is Athena, the motherless daughter of Zeus who sprang fully grown and clad in armour from Zeus’ forehead.

Athena is the Greek Godess of reason, Arts & Literature and intelligent activity.

She was a fierce warrior who defended her home and city.

The frame is a pretty base metal or pinchbeck surround and it is quite large at 2 ¼” tall x 2 ¼” wide.

On the rear is a glass compartment which could have contained hair or a picture. It has it’s own integral frame so can easily be lifted out using a craft knife to put in a picture or lock of hair or both – or just removed altogether leaving the back of the cameo in view.

A lovely genuine period Cameo that dates to around 1870.

There was a ring at the top rear and I have added a base metal chain so that it can be worn as a pendant.

You could replace this yourself with a gold one perhaps.

It comes in a hard double door presentation case that is perfect for giving / packing.
