These needles are a vintage method of testing gold for karat purity.

The tips of the needles are each a known samples of gold.

Then each known sample would be rubbed down the black touchstone.

An unknown gold sample would also be rubbed down the length of the touchstone and compared to the known karat samples.

making it possible to identify the karat of the unknown samples

via the acid testing.

This method of testing is/was utilized by Jewelers

to ascertain the karat of Gold jewelry.

The 9 needles Test Gold from 4k to 20k.
