Finest Quality VICTORIAN Deeply Carved WHITBY JET Serpent SNAKE Choker Necklace

On offer is this truly exquisite 19th century Whitby Jet serpent/snake mourning choker necklace.

The snake symbolised eternal love and was particularly appropriate in jet; the favoured jewellery of Queen Victoria for much of her life whilst she mourned Prince Albert.

Seldom have I come across any Whitby Jet piece of this quality and amazing condition from the Victorian era; I have owned it for a number of years and never seen its equal.

Many of the jet snake pieces seen on ebay are put together (quite obviously so in some cases!)..the jet in this is all started life together and is 100% original. Not to mention, snake pieces seen are virtually always faceted, NOT each segment having been painstakingly hand carved in dim light in a jet workshop.

That all said, I must point out that the necklace is double thread on a stretchy black string (an old replacement as 19th century one would have perished years ago) and really could do with being changed to a wire; it has some natural coil as is but cannot be worn as a necklace unless it is wired (I have shown it in wear in image 18 just balanced around my neck).

If you are just displaying the choker as part of a collection (as I have) it will be fine as is.

The necklace consists of 18 deeply carved, exquisite panels,along with the large head and finely worked tail.

It measures approx 17.5" in length and is 0.5" wide.

Weight: 46.48gms.

The like of this truly doesn't come around often....I can only find one tiny fleabite underneath snake mouth.
