SIMPLY STUNNING WAXED PLASTER DEATH MASK.
KNOWN AS "L'INCONNUE DE LA SEINE" OR
"THE UNKNOWN LADY OF THE SEINE"
CIRCA 1900-1910.
(Later copies of these were made in just plain plaster).
There is nothing morbid about this piece,it truly is a beautiful and very serene piece of art that looks wonderful in its lit display case.
The case she is displayed in is a modern copy of an original piece which would of been of the period when she was found and lit by remote led lights for a simply stunning effect that shows her beauty.
The measurements of the case are,70 cm in height,by 35 cm wide and 26 cm in depth.
The story of this beautiful and unknown young woman is a tragic one as she is believed to have commited suicide in the late 1880's and pulled from the river Seine around the Quai du louvre in Paris.
The pathologist was so taken by her beauty he made other waxed plaster copies of her face as this was before photography and was a way of determining a dead persons identity.
Prints and sketches of these were produced and placed around the town or city in the hope of finding out who the deceased was.
The later plain plaster copies of this piece proved to be a popular and somewhat fashionable fixture within Parisian bohemian society.
Simply stunning in its entirety of a very peaceful,serene and lovely looking young woman who's life was cut cruelly short.
