Civil War Artist H E Valentine Sketch Book Joseph Smith.

This is a genuine, one of a kind, authentic and incredible piece of History.

This is an original work done by Herbert E. Valentine, there are no copies or re-prints of it. Truly a One of a Kind.

We have offered a few pictures of the sketches here but we are not releasing all the sketches. The buyer can decide if they want to release these up to now "unseen" sketches to the general Public.

The pictures do not show all the detail of the sketches. Scanning would have shown better detail but we did not want to handle the book anymore than absolutely necessary.

H.E. Valentine was a Civil War artist born in the year 1841. According to the Virginia Tech Archives, Valentine disappeared after the Civil War, which ended in 1865. The first sketch in this sketchbook is dated 1908, a little more than 40 years after his disappearance.

The only thing we have found similar to this is sketch book is on Virginia Tech’s Website.

The book for sale here has 36 pages chronicling H E Valentine’s trip from Bedford (NH or MA?) To South Royalton, VT. Sketches date from 1908 to 1913. The first page has the artist’s full signature and he gives his address as Boston. This page is dated July of 1908.

The book appears to be a tribute or following of Joseph Smith, founder of the Latter Day Saints Movement and Publisher of the Book of Mormon. Sketches include the home of E B Ellis Quarry which was the quarry that supplied the granite to make a 40 Ton memorial to Joseph Smith. The monument is in South Royalton VT and was built on the 100th year anniversary of Smith’s birth. Another page is dedicated to Joseph Smith’s Birthplace of Sharon, VT. Valentine may have been visiting his buddies from the civil war days but it seems he was following a path that Joseph Smith may have taken years before.

Book is in good Vintage Condition. Some pages are beginning to come loose. Book should be in a museum or private collection where it can be properly preserved.
