Simple but eye catching portrait of Cavalry man and his horse. This item is made from Sweet Gum wood milled locally in the Geneva Florida . The wood is called “rescued wood” because it is milled from downed trees such as from hurricanes and seasonal storms. If you have an interest in the source please see olegeneralstore.
The sweet gum wood, as explained to me by the mill owner Mr. Hughes, was a walnut alternative during WWII. Wall nut was used for gun stocks and became scarce to woodworkers. I found the sweet gum and the Live oak to have exceptional grain configuration.
The pieces are cut to size then milled on a CNC machine. Remedial work includes some hand carving and deburring. For most finishes on these pieces I use a two part stain made up of grain filler and tint. Finally a thin coat of Bees wax and buffing.
All items are from solid one piece lumber – no laminates or joined planks.
