Offered for sale is a lot of THREE George III Jettons.

Let's just start by my saying: I love these pieces. They're gorgeous! Let us be absolutely clear on this: these are not coins. They never were and never will be. What they are is a beautiful piece of history from a very specific time. These tokens are what you would find on a card table in an 18th century coffee house, being used by naval officers waiting to be sent off to hunt down Napoleon's fleet. Playing games like whist (a forerunner to Contract Bridge) people could quickly run up enormous debts or winnings - but for those naval officers, this really didn't matter: they were going to the death or to huge prizes.

These jettons are not incredibly rare and you can find a few examples on eBay any day of the week around £10 each. The pieces offered are all at least VF.

The lot consists of:

Brass jeton, approx 21mm and 2.1g half guinea. Obverse: laureate bust GEORGIVS III DEI GRATIA. Reverse: N.C.R. CO. DG. L. T. REX. FD. B.I.R.M 1790

Copper jeton, approx 25mm, 3.8g full guinea. Obverse: GEORGIVS III DEI GRATIA. Reverse: B. ET. T. A. REX. F.D. R _ AR. ST. D. S. T. M. S. C. 1791

Please see the photographs for condition and note that these form the majority of the item's description.

NOW THE LEGAL BIT. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

It was always my intention on these lots that the postage be kept to a minimum in order to give collectors and kids alike a great deal. There are lots of enthusiastic collectors out there working on a budget and there are lots of kids who love old coins and I enjoy getting a nice deal for all of them. Of course, as soon as you try to do something to help people, someone else will come along and take advantage of that.

As a result, standard postage will be by Royal Mail using their "Signed For" service.

There will be two additional delivery options on the invoice.

The first is a LOW COST option of 2nd Class Post. PLEASE NOTE: if you select that option then you do so AT YOUR RISK. The package will not be tracked or insured. I always obtain proof of postage and if the item is not delivered then the loss lies with the buyer.

The second option is Royal Mail's First Class Tracked Service. This is more expensive and is recommended for more valuable items. If the value of the lot exceeds £50, this is the only service that will be offered.

To reiterate, if you choose a 2nd Class Post delivery option then the risk of loss is with the buyer.

By placing a bid, you accept these terms.

COMBINED POSTAGE: I am more than happy to combine the postage on multiple lots. If you make a winning bid and I see that you are bidding on other lots, I will drop you a message explaining that despatch will be held until all the auctions have ended. If you have won an item and intend to make bids on other lots, then please send me a message after the first lot has sold.

Sorry for the long winded text but modern life makes it necessary. Thank you for reading.
