STUNNING 1960’s OVERSIZE STEEL ROLEX PRECISION GENTS VINTAGE WATCH

Overview

Rolex began making larger dress watches in the very late 1930’s – the fashion for mens watches was a case size of 30mm to 33mm – the vast majority were in gold and only a few in steel…. This Rolex is not only the oversize model (34mm across the case excluding the winding crown) it’s also in steel. The solid steel case is in excellent condition with only some minor surface scratching to the beautifully rounded case back – we usually give this a soft polish but very rarely the Rolex Crown is visible. The original Rolex signed black dial has been professionally refinished to the highest possible standards and is striking – please note, black dial watches are difficult to photograph and any marks are just reflections. The raised steel spear head batons and original steel sword hands provide a lovely contrast to the black and blend perfectly with the gleaming case. The very high grade Rolex signed 17 jewel manual wind movement is again in excellent condition and has just been fully serviced by my professional watchmaker. To complete this very special watch I have added a new, high quality Hirsch and Sonning Vintage Watches black crocodile skin strap with a steel Hirsch buckle.

This is a simply stunning example of this iconic and extremely rare watch. Due to poor light conditions I’ve had to use a mixture a natural and artificial light for these pictures – it looks even better in real life and any marks are just reflections or dust.

My asking price is below the value for a watch of this condition and rarity, particularly with the continual rise in value of vintage watches of this high quality. In view of the high grade Swiss movement, I will include a 12 month written guarantee on the movement, which is long enough for you to assess the working order.

The Case

The provenance polished solid steel oversize case is in excellent condition with only minor signs of wear – as mentioned, there are some minor surface scratches to the case back but please bear in mind these are harder to see with the naked eye. The case measures 34mm wide, excluding the winding crown and 43mm, including the lugs. The outside caseback carries the Rolex Crown. The inside caseback is signed ‘Acier Inoxyable’, ‘Montres Rolex SA Geneva Switzerland’ and the case number is ’9118′.

The Dial

The original Rolex signed black dial is both striking and breathtakingly elegant. The applied steel spear head hour batons and steel sword hands provide a lovely contrast to the dial and blend perfectly with the steel case. It is signed ‘Rolex’, ‘Precision’ and ‘T Swiss T’. The lens shows no signs of wear or scratching.

The Movement

The very high grade Rolex signed movement has just been serviced by my professional watchmaker and is running beautifully. It is signed ‘Montres Rolex SA Geneva Swiss’ and ‘Seventeen 17 Jewels’.

The Strap

The watch sits on a new, high quality black Sonning Vintage Watches and Hirsch crocodile skin strap and a steel Hirsch buckle.

We hold a Hirsch franchise and are able to supply any strap in their range.

The Conclusion

This is an extremely desirable and highly collectable vintage watch from one of horology’s most famous names and will, if history is any judge, provide an excellent financial investment as well as a possession to treasure and enjoy. As every year goes by there are less and less of these iconic watches and the value just keeps increasing. I will provide an insurance valuation in excess of my asking price. Please appreciate the difficulty of photographing this piece, it looks far better in real life. Subject to your location I’ll happily show the watch. I’m happy for this watch to be authenticated if required.
