A stone meteorite from the Gao-Guenie witnessed fall
Presented by Geoff of Meteorite Men
Description: Whole stone
Weight: 12.6 grams
Class: Stone meteorite,
H5 chondrite
Approximate dimensions: 28 mm x 20 mm x 15 mm
Date and location of fall: Burkina
Faso, Africa. Fell March 5, 1960
Notes: Moderately oriented individual with remnant fusion crust
This
very collectible witnessed fall meteorite was originally named
Gao, and was initially believed to be different from the Guenie
meteorite found in the same area. Researchers later determined
that both meteorites were identical, and the fall was renamed
Gao-Guenie in 1998, though many collectors still refer to this
H5 by its original name. This lovely meteorite is one of the
best available examples of a chondrite. Specimens often show
fusion crust and an attractive ochre patina. Many also show
classic features of orientation, including rollover lips. Cut
and polished specimens display an abundance of metal flakes,
lovely color, and sometimes impact melt breccia features.
Geoff had the very good fortune to meet an American engineer
who lived and worked in Burkina Faso for more than a decade.
Over the years he bought a large number of Gao-Guenie stones
from the local finders. Throughout his time in Burkina Faso
the engineer put aside all of the very best complete stones
— a large number of them 100% fusion crusted and some
showing distinct orientation — and saved them for many
years. He ended up with some excellent stones, and Geoff purchased
most of the collection from him.
Display stands and scale cubes are not included.
