MORE ABOUT == The Youth International Party, whose members were commonly called Yippies, was a radically youth-oriented and countercultural revolutionary offshoot of the free speech and anti-war movements of the 1960s. It was founded on December 31, 1967. They employed theatrical gestures, such as advancing a pig ("Pigasus the Immortal") as a candidate for President in 1968, to mock the social status quo.  They have been described as a highly theatrical, anti-authoritarian and anarchist youth movement of "symbolic politics". Since they were well known for street theater and politically themed pranks, many of the "old school" political left either ignored or denounced them. According to ABC News, "The group was known for street theater pranks and was once referred to as the 'Groucho Marxists'."

The Yippies had no formal membership or hierarchy. Abbie Hoffman, Anita Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Nancy Kurshan, and Paul Krassner founded the Yippies (according to his own account, Krassner coined the name) at a meeting in Abbie and Anita's New York flat on December 31, 1967. "If the press had created 'hippie,' could not we five hatch the 'yippie'?" Abbie Hoffman wrote. Other activists associated with the Yippies include Stew Albert, Ed Rosenthal, Allen Ginsberg, Ed Sanders, Robin Morgan, Phil Ochs, Robert M. Ockene, William Kunstler, Jonah Raskin, Steve Conliff, John Sinclair, Dana Beal, Matthew Landy Steen, Judy Gumbo, Ben Masel, Tom Forcade, David Peel, Tuli Kupferberg, Jill Johnston, Daisy Deadhead and Bob Fass.

A Yippie flag was frequently seen at anti-war demonstrations. The flag had a black background with a five-pointed red star in the center, and a green marijuana cannabis leaf superimposed over it.

This flag is also mentioned in Hoffman's Steal This Book. Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin became the most famous Yippies .

FROM THE COVER === FEW AMERICANS can claim the honor of having remained an effective dissident voice for change for 30 years without ever cashing in their chips for the comfort of Wall Street, academia or elected office. When he died, on April 12, 1989, Abbie Hoffman was a committed environmentalist working as hard to force the clean-up of rivers and lakes in Pennsylvania and New York as he had on behalf of civil rights and civil liberties in the 1950s and 1960s. The Best of Abbie Hoffman spans Abbie's entire career, from his earliest to his latest writings. At every phase, somehow, he managed to write it all down. Today, his words stun us by their purity and crassness, their clowning bravado and utter seriousness. They express the pointed disrespect for the status quo, as well as the high aspirations for freedom and justice, of an entire generation. At no other time in our nation's history could they have been written.

"No on in America better represents the spirit of the 1960's"  = The Los Angeles Times

This book is the autobiography of a bona fide American revolutionary. In fact, as I went through it, large parts of the sixties lit up like areas of a stage grand enough to hold an opera company. Of course, we all think we know the sixties. To people of my generation, and the generation after us, the sixties is a private decade, a good relative of a decade, the one we believe we know the way we believe we know Humphrey Bogart .. Yet reading this work, I came to decide that my piece of the sixties wasn't as large as I thought. If we were going to get into comparisons, Abbie lived it, I observed it; Abbie committed his life .. . === NORMAN MAILER,  FROM THE FOREWORD

"Unless we become a society that judges itself not by the opportunities we provide for the most fortunate, but for the least fortunate, we fail at any chance we have at a truly democratic life."

—ABBIE HOFFMAN

MORE ABOUT ABBIE HOFFMAN === Abbot Howard "Abbie" Hoffman (November 30, 1936 – April 12, 1989) was an American political and social activist who co-founded the Youth International Party ("Yippies"). Hoffman was arrested and tried for conspiracy and inciting to riot as a result of his role in protests that led to violent confrontations with police during the 1968 Democratic National Convention, along with Jerry Rubin, David Dellinger, Tom Hayden, Rennie Davis, John Froines, Lee Weiner, and Bobby Seale. The group was known collectively as the "Chicago Eight"; when Seale's prosecution was separated from the others, they became known as the Chicago Seven. While the defendants were initially convicted of intent to incite a riot, the verdicts were overturned on appeal. Hoffman arose to prominence in the 1960s, continued his activism in the 1970s, and has remained a symbol of the youth rebellion of the counterculture era.
