One packet of over 500 seeds.

Big, bright poppies are a sensational addition to your vegetable garden. Ornamental Papaver somniferum, or bread-seed poppies, grow easily in sunny gardens where they can extend their long tap-root into open, deeply dug soil. A gritty yet moisture-retaining soil, amended with some bulky organic nutrients (rotted manure, leaf mould, or compost, for example) is ideal. Tall, sunlit poppies are a common sight in and around vegetable gardens. If your garden produces good carrots, beets, radishes, or dill, it will grow wonderful poppies, too.

Seeds are collected in 2015 from the plants shown in the pictures and others, grown in our gardens in Edmonton, Canada.

Red Double --- These are the big, lush "peony-flowered" poppies. Give them space. Or, in less than ideal conditions (where plants a bit crowded, for example), blossoms may be semi-double, and the striking purple-black centres will be visible. 500+ seeds.

Seeds sown in late autumn or in winter, over bare or snow-covered ground, will germinate the following spring. If saving seeds, store them cold -- in the fridge or outdoors in a sealed container exposed to winter temperatures.

Cool nights and warm days are best for germination. From early spring, sow every two weeks for months-long displays of brilliant colours. Sow again when nights turn cool in late summer and you may have flowers in autumn, right through the first light frosts.

A page of more detailed instructions and growing notes will be included with your seeds.

These seeds are collected from hand-pollinated and open-pollinated plants. We hand-pollinate as much as possible so that the best colours return year after year. Bees love a poppy garden, too. They are a big reason we have all this wonderful seed. The potential for cross-pollination (when a bee visits many flowers in succession) means seed from a fringe-petalled pink flower, for example, may not produce flowers exactly the same as the flower it came from. Many of the next generation's flowers will closely resemble the seed parent, and there may also be some lovely surprises.

A Note on Feedback

We appreciate feedback from buyers. For one thing, it tells us the good news that a package of seeds or plants has reached its destination.
