As vehicles have become lighter and more powerful the problem of NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) has increased. In particular, the torsional vibration present in many automotive drivelines can be the source of gear rattle noise. Manual transmissions can produce gear rattle noise when the gears impact on each other when what is known as “mesh backlash” occurs.

A solution to the problem of gear rattle noise has been to install Dual Mass Flywheels (DMF). These flywheels act as a filter that isolates the engines rotational irregularities and torsional vibrations from the driveline. As Dual Mass Flywheels are a tuned system and are matched to the engine torque curve, engine resonant characteristics and vehicle loads, it is important that when replacing a Dual Mass Flywheel with a solid flywheel or Dual Mass Replacement (DMR) the system has been engineered to the performance specifications of each specific vehicle. A DMR clutch kit is designed to provide the damping effect not from the flywheel but rather via the use of a wide angularity clutch disc. This is why we do not recommend you buy a solid flywheel and attempt to replace only the flywheel as a stand-alone part as the matched clutch kit supplied is in fact the only means by which a successful replacement can be achieved.
