English pottery Spode Jackfield black basalt teapot. c1800

This is a small teapot. The black basalt wares were popular at a time when ladies liked to show off their pale white skin and what better contrast than a black teapot set against white hands. Unmarked but see ‘Spode’ (plate 143) by Leonard Whiter for a similar tea pot. These were some of Spode's earliest wares.

Embossed with poppies, grapes and leaves and has a decorated spout.
The stubble textured lid has a spiral decorated final and the teapot dates to c1800.

Diameter 11cms x 18cms from handle to spout x 7cms high
Weight: 270gms
Capacity 8floz (227mls)

Condition: Excellent with no cracks and no chips.
The spout is fully intact and there is no damage to the handle or finial of the lid.
It is extremely rare to find one of these teapots with no damage.
