The Society for Light Treatment and Biological Rhythms (SLTBR) recommends light therapy as the best non-drug therapy to treat seasonal depression.

Light levels determine the sleep / wake cycles of both animals and humans. The desire to sleep is brought on by the secretion of Melatonin, and the bright natural light or the light from a SAD lamp significantly reduces Melatonin, greatly improving our energy levels. Typical symptoms of SAD are depression, lethargy, anxiety, craving, social problems, sleep problems and loss of libido. These symptoms can be commonly resolved through the use of The Aurora SAD light box.

Usage
  • You should sit in a comfortable chair in front of a table or desk.
  • Place The Aurora at an angle of around 45° to the left or right of your vision directly in front of you.
  • Make sure the lightbox is directed to your eye level.
  • It should be positioned 70cm (30 inches) from your eyes.
  • The environment where you are using the lightbox should be a well lit room – Natural daylight or electric lighting if it is dark.
  • You can carry on doing normal activities whilst using The Aurora ie. Reading, writing, using a computer or watching TV.

  • When's the best time to use the Sunny light box?

Most people find that light therapy in the mornings works best so, if you are just starting out, try this first. Try not to use your light late in the evening though (i.e. within 3 hours of going to bed) as you may find it difficult to get to sleep.

If you have trouble waking up in the mornings then you should definitely use a light box first thing.

About Bright Light Therapy

Why might you need Bright Light Therapy?

Historically, people have tended to work outside. It is only in the last 100 or so years that
people began depriving themselves of vital sunshine by spending most of their day inside.
There is evidence that this

What is lux?

The amount of light under different conditions

Bright sunshine10,000 lux
INNOSOL Bright light therapyAt least 10,000 lux
Well illuminated office400 lux
General illumination in homes50 lux

1 lux is the light intensity produced by a single candle from one metre away. The sun,
unsurprisingly, produces a lot of lux, around 50,000-100,000. Compare this with the light
intensity in the average home or office, between 50 and 400 lux and it`s easy to see why the
phenomenon known as SAD is on the increase.

What is SAD?

SAD stands for Seasonal Affective Disorder and is a medically recognised condition that results
from our body`s response to shorter days and smaller amounts of daylight. SUB SAD, or Winter
Blues is a milder form of SAD affecting a considerably larger number of people.

You may be suffering from SAD if you find you often feel tired or lacking in energy, particularly
around autumn and winter time when the days get shorter, the nights get longer and a bright,
sunny day seems like a distant memory!

What can INNOSOL Bright Light Therapy do for you?

Bright light therapy is a pleasant way to take care of yourself. INNOSOL bright light devices
effectively compensate for the lack of natural daylight.

For Bright Light Therapy to have any effect it requires a light intensity from 2,500 lux. All INNOSOL Bright Light Therapy lamps emit at least 10,000 luxes of light. Of course, INNOSOL Bright Light devices meet all the requirements set on high quality light therapy; the light does not flicker, it is evenly distributed and the opaque lamp shade filters the UV emissions.
