Old Sheffield Plate Queens pattern Grape scissors close silver plate c1816

An interesting ‘Queens’ pattern set of grape scissors bearing Old Sheffield plate marks of Thomas Harwood 1816. Harwood was listed as a ‘close plater’. The surface was plated with thin sheets of silver attached by solder, in a process described as ‘close plating’. This pair has an element of plate missing exposing the steel base metal. It can be seen that the ‘silver plate’ is actually quite thick. These are of great interest in the history of cutlery manufacturing and would make a fine reference addition to any collection of grape scissors, Old Sheffield plate or Kitchenalia.
