Here for your consideration is a magnificent and extremely rare, 1950s, Dunhill “Aquarium” half giant style, chromium plated, table lighter, designed by Ben Shillingford. The top has a raisable arm stamped Dunhill and Reg. No. 737418 above a four piece lucite body, carved and painted, with two delightful freshwater fish, to the front a Gold Dust Molly and a Blood Fin Tetra, with a single Angelfish to the reverse, set amongst plants and rocks.

The aquatic scenes are very well defined and colourful. The fish are very well proportioned and the whole design is extremely well composed. The metal mounts are all chromium plated and the four lucite panels are crystal clear with curved inverted edges. A lift arm on the top operates nice and smoothly meeting the flame chamber neatly.

This superb, Dunhill aquarium table lighter is in absolutely fabulous and perfect condition, with no scratches, damage or repairs. A real testament to its previous owner. It does have a some beautiful age related patina/base wear, commensurate with 66 years of age, but nothing unusual.

Please take time to look at all 12 photos, to fully appreciate the exquisite quality of workmanship, in this fabulous handmade table lighter.

History ....

Ben Shillingford (1904-2000) worked for Dunhill in the 1950’s, he perfected the art of carving and painting lucite panels to resemble miniature aquariums, these panels were then applied to the lighter bodies in four sections. Upon his retirement, his workmanship could not be equalled, and the skills necessary to continue to manufacture the aquarium lighter couldn't be found, hence production ceased. Today these exquisite aquarium lighters have become highly prized, collected and revered throughout the world !!

Lucite ....

Developed in World War II and used by the American and Royal Air Force as an alternative to glass which would shatter when under fire. Following the war, the lucite that remained was eagerly sought by artists, designers and Jewellery makers. It could be carved and painted, resulting in highly decorative shiny objet d’art. Each Dunhill aquarium lighter is a completely unique work of art, having been handmade, the decoration of each varies considerably. The aquarium lighter was made in two sizes the half giant style and the smaller service size. Produced in three finishes, gold plated, silver plated and chromium plated.

Technique ....

The reverse intaglio technique requires patience and time. Whether you are carving lucite or rock crystal the “stone” will need to be cut, polished or prepared/prepped to accept the carving. For example, carving rock crystal which is a natural quartz mineral will need to be cut with a diamond saw and ground into the perfect cabochon and that requires polishing and more polishing which is all done by hand. The design is then painted on usually with watercolours. Next, a scribe etches the design into the stone. Finally, when the engraved design is finished it is painted. The design is so tiny that often brushes with a single hair are used to apply the paint. In some cases, silver was employed to further enhance the design. The clear cabochon dome magnified the miniature a bit. These “paintings under glass” are remarkably life-like with the produced three-dimensional effect and its exceptional depth. Their value depends on age, condition, subject matter, setting, and size. An intaglio that gives the illusion the subject rises above the base is termed “cavo rilievo.”
