No one want Windows 10 even if it is given for free.  As a computer expert, I don't want free Windows 10, but if you want it, just ask me and I'd install for you in place of Windows 7.  If you choose to install yourself, it will cause you all kinds of problems.

Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 32-bit can run most software designed for Windows XP 32-bit by right click on the software exe and set compatibility to Windows XP so that Windows 7 becomes Windows XP.

Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit can run most software designed for Windows XP 64-bit by right click on the software exe and set compatibility to Windows XP so that Windows 7 becomes Windows XP.

A laptop is a lot better.  A tablet can't burn DVDs, can't play good video games, can't run good software available on Windows and it takes too much time for typing email. 

With a mouse, a laptop is as convenient as a desktop without taking the space.

Laptops are for entertainment too.  When you watch a movie on stereo and big screen, you'd enjoy more.

Obviously, laptop is also for learning as well as working.

It is also good for video processing and DVD creation.

When you have clips of videos and picture on your phone, it is very hard to show all to your friends and family, but when you have a laptop and install a video procession software, you can turn those videos and pictures into a video or picture slideshow with background music of your choice.  You can then burn it into DVDs.

The possibilities and applications on laptops are endless.  If you can afford more than 1 laptop, it would be even better because video processing or downloading videos from the internet or DVD burning needs a dedicated laptop.

Why do you need a dedicated laptop for a special application?

If you burn DVD and use it for any other application, it could mess up your DVD burning and the disc would be garbage.

In downloading, it usually takes days and you want to keep the laptop on all the time so the downloading doesn't get interrupted.  When you use the laptop while downloading, not only that it would be too slow for you to use because the internet bandwidth and CPU are used up in downloading but it could also interfere with the downloading because your application take away the CPU power needed for downloading.

In video processing, it is very time consuming, which could take days to complete depending on whether you want the laptop to modify every frame in the video or not. so it is best to let the laptop running video processing undisturbed.

Those are some examples why you need a dedicated laptop to run special application.
