Scarce original January
27, 1965 engraved invitation to attend the dinner in Atlanta honoring Martin
Luther King Jr.,
the 1964 winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.
"You are cordially
invited to attend a dinner honoring the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize Winner - Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. -
an Atlanta Citizen on Wednesday, January 27, 1965 -
Seven o'clock in the evening at the Dinkler Plaza Hotel - Atlanta,
Georgia"
The invitation contains
the rather lengthy list of sponsors, including Rabbi Jacob M. Rothschild, Jessie
Hill Jr., Ralph McGill and Senator Leroy Johnson. Return R.S.V.P. instructions
at top.
A rare memento of one of the shining moments in the Civil Rights
movement of the 1960's in America.
The Nobel Peace Prize and the handling of
Dr. King's honors in the city of Atlanta brought out the best and worst in the
city. The surprising award to Dr. King had a polarizing effect on his
opposition. The Civil Rights movement in America was now center-stage of a
global theater. Rumors of KKK protests and violence surrounded the night,
although not much happened in the end.
A few spots, else fine.
