A note about the denomination:
In dollars the lowest denomination is 1 cent, and in the past, in the U.S. there was even the half cent.
Likewise in Spain, in colonial times, the lowest denomination was the maravedi, and there was even
a half maravedi (the blanca).
In the case of dollars 100 cents = 1 dollar.
In contrast, in spanish coinage 34 maravedis = 1 real (which was a weight in silver)
16 reales was equal to 1 escudo (a weight in gold)
The
8 real coin was known in the US as the "Spanish dollar" in the 18th
century. These were chopped up into 8 bits for change.
2 bits was equal
to one quarter, which is where the term "quarter" comes from and where the
expression "2 bits" comes from.
Also where the name "dollar" comes from.
