    • Second in our series of Crochet Collector Costumes is a magnificent 18th Century French Court dress.  Upon ascending the throne in 1772 Marie Antoinette re-introduced the farthingale to the French Court.  This was the framework worn under dresses to create the widest possible skirt which extended only at the sides.  Early farthingales were made of leather covered iron hoops, sewn together with strips of fabric, to form a cage.  This was replaced in the latter part of the century with pads and pillows.  Our costume features an opulent lace underskirt typical of the era, complete with pads sewn in at the hips for an authentic profile.  The overskirt is crocheted in a lovely pattern with the look of heavy brocade.  An optional opal blending filament was used at the same time to produce a fairy tale pearlized effect.  The skirt has been designed to fall 2" below an 11-1/2" doll's feet for display purposes.  The bodice is tightly fitted with a deep V waistline accentuated with bands of gold braid.  Tight elbow length sleeves open to reveal a cascade of crochet lace at the cuff.  The delicate band of rose pink and gold appearing at her hemline and sleeves create an antique effect.  Coiffures of this period were elaborate and from the 1770's continued to get higher and higher, until reaching a height of nearly two feet!  We have created an authentic bee hive hairstyle (hairstyling instructions included) for our lady complete with hair ornaments.  Hats of this period were of necessity quite large.  Our hat is made with jaunty pleats at the back and adorned with bright rose maribou feathers.  A band of rose pink and gold encircles the hat to match her overdress.  The loose fitting bloomers are gathered below the knee in a triple layer of frothy lace and ribbons.  Her exquisite little shoes are realistically detailed with high tongue, frilly bows and gold heels and trim.  Our costume is designed in bedspread weight crochet cotton with bedspread weight gold metallic thread trim.  Finer metallic threads can be worked double or triple strand.  This fascinating reproduction of a long lost era is sure to please the most discriminating of doll collectors.  Patterns in this leaflet:
