A Fragment from an old , about 1850 Thai manuscript.
Written on the traditional mulberry
paper the Pali text is written as usual in thin black Cambodian script. The
manuscript described the Lives of the Buddha. I purchased this
during the early 1970s in Bangkok Thailand for my own collection. Please
go to my "other offers" where you can find a complete and beautifully
illustrated manuscript from the time.
As all of our auctions this is a
guaranteed old original and as described and pictured. Your money back ,
no questions asked within 30 days.

call the temple their home. Blessings and good karma are part of all my

Abbot Watana of the South Texas Thai - Lao Temple in Rockport, TX is accepting one of my pet food donations which you make possible.
This offer is for the manuscript ( fragment ) pictured here. It consists of 14 connected leaves , each 5 x 25 inches or 70 x 25 inches overall. Condition as pictures with stains , weakness in the folds, repairs old and newer. Properly displayed it could look quite beautiful.

My cat 'Gabriel' ( who just had to get in the picture ) is NOT part of the offer but the Thai temple here in town has plenty of cats to take home.

Information
Please visit our website for info on Thai and
Burmese illuminated manuscripts. ( currently still under construction)
Long before the introduction of modern paper, Thai scholars
were writing books on a variety of subjects mainly religion but also on warfare
, nature, medicine, astrology, art and more. These manuscripts ( Thai 'Samut')
were often illustrated with line drawings or colorful miniature paintings of
Buddah , the Jataka Tales and Phra Malai a famous
monk who visits the heavens and hell. . The format of these manuscripts is
accordion like or fanfold and stretched out may measure 20 feet or more .The
paper , which is similar to extra heavy watercolor paper , was made from the
pulp of the 'khoi' tree. Ink was made from lampblack suspended in a
liquid. Paints were derived from local earth pigments and other pigments
imported from China. The paint brushes were made from native animal hair.
Around 1850 modern paper and printing were introduced to Thailand which
spelled a quick end to this traditional art form.
Most of the manuscripts have been lost to time and the
elements. The late Doris Duke ( Heiress to the 'Lucky Strike" tobacco
fortune ) had a huge collection of these manuscripts which went mostly to
American and British Libraries. A few are still guarded by Buddhist monks in the
libraries of their temples. We instantly fell in love with these lovely
paintings and collected our material during the 60's and 70's while working and
living in Thailand. Ours is one of the few important collections of this art
form in the USA and we are selling it as we look forward to retirement.
