4MM diameter cord is an ideal size to use as it provides strength but is not too thick at the same time so will not get jammed inside the recoil housing... It will remain smooth to pull with wear & tear being reduced...

...We also provide a 2 metre length of cord, 1 metre is usually enough so you should get a spare...
