The EW purpose is to have enough room on the outside of the filter so it does not get into the image taken from a wide angle lens. The outside of the filter is 72mm in diameter and can accommodate lens caps and other filters
This filter, as with all the new B+W filters were purchased by me from Schneider USA for the inventory in my now closed retail camera store.
They are all all new, never used or sold.
