I am from Ecuador and I go to my country twice a year to personally pick up and choose one by one, the best Original Panama Hat production for my demanding costumers, in several sizes and styles, (I don't work with the commercial category hats because my products are flawless woven and total quality guaranteed).

THE QUALITIES:
There are several factors that determine the quality of a straw hat, one of the most important is how thin the woven of the hat is, finer means better quality, it is more expensive because its processing is more laborious and entails a much longer time. Other factors are also the treatment used to process the straw, and here the "Panama" hats from Ecuador stand out because during its process, considered unique in the world. You can recognise an outstanding quality “Panama Hat” if the hat can be folded (rolled). In addition, you have to consider the shape of the hat that should be completely uniform and a very important fact is that all the seams of the hat must be overcast entirely by hand with the same straw and never sewed by machine!
All hats that I sell are authentic and fully handwoven so can slightly differ between each other.
THE PROCESS
Hat making is completely manual, with all its forms simplified by custom and skill of the craft workers. The first part to be woven is the pattern. Few straw fibers are employed in its initial creation, to which fibers are progressively added until a width is attained that varies between five and 10 centimeters. To weave the hat body, a mold (a block of wood) is used to gradually produce the shape to where the brim begins, which is the final element of a hat of seven to 15 centimeters. After that comes the “remate” (tying off), which consists of doing a special interweaving to finish the weaving process.
The next stage in the creation of a hat is performed by women and is known as the “azocada” (tightening), which consists of tightening the tied-off fibers to keep the weave from coming undone, followed by clipping the excess fibers. Then the hat is washed, “whitened” or dyed, and dried in the sun. When it has lost its shape and looks like a bell, with precision and strength the craftsman’s hands return it to its original shape; this stage is the “compostura” (reshaping). The persons who perform this activity are usually urban dwellers and work in the warm atmosphere of their home.

HOW TO MEASURE YOUR HEAD TO CHOOSE THE CORRECT SIZE FOR A HAT
1. Get a tape measure and put it around your head.
2. Place it just above your ears where the hat is expected to sit
3. If you have a hat that fits well, put it on. Look and feel where it rests. Measure in that same spot. For most people, that just above the center of the forehead in front, and on the upper side of the “lump” in back.
4. The tape should be above the tops of your ears on both sides. Most people like their hats to rest about half an inch above the ears. Some prefer higher. Lower is likely to be a problem later. Be sure to measure in the place where you want your hat to rest. Check to make sure the tape is level all around. Pull the tape snug and see if it feels right. If not, try a little higher and a little lower until it feels just right.
