Shop the best, shop an 'Original Montecristi Hat' fully manually executed in Montecristi, considered truly art pieces and that only will improve with the age. Avoid fake hats or acrylic hats that make you sweat and not make you feel fresh.

THE QUALITIES:
There are several factors that determine the quality of a straw hat, one of the most important is how thin the woven of the hat is, finer means better quality, it is more expensive because its processing is more laborious and entails a much longer time. Other factors are also the treatment used to process the straw, and here the "Montecristi" hats stand out because during its process, considered the best and unique in the world, no chemicals are used, which makes the straw never weaken or lose its texture. You can recognise an original “Montecristi Panama Hat” if the hat is 'fishbone wave' (brisa wave is considerably cheaper and it is not an Original Montecristi hat) and natural color because “Cuenca Hats” use another techniques for whitening the straw. Another difference is that "no quality" straw hats can't be folded, instead Montecristi Hats you can wash, iron and fold them as you like. In addition, you have to consider the shape of the hat that should be uniform and a very important fact is that all the seams of the hat have to be overcast entirely by hand with the same straw and never sewed by machine!
THE PROCESS
Hat making is completely manual, with all its forms simplified by custom and skill of the craft workers. The first part to be woven is the pattern. Few straw fibres are employed in its initial creation, to which fibres are progressively added until a width is attained that varies between five and 10 centimetres. To weave the hat body, a mould (a block of wood) is used to gradually produce the shape to where the brim begins, which is the final element of a hat of seven to 15 centimetres. After that comes the “remate” (tying off), which consists of doing a special interweaving to finish the weaving process.
The next stage in the creation of a hat is performed by women and is known as the “azocada” (tightening), which consists of tightening the tied-off fibres to keep the weave from coming undone, followed by clipping the excess fibres. Then the hat is washed, “whitened” or dyed, and dried in the sun. When it has lost its shape and looks like a bell, with precision and strength the craftsman’s hands return it to its original shape; this stage is the “compostura” (reshaping). The persons who perform this activity are usually urban dwellers and work in the warm atmosphere of their home.

HeightHOW TO MEASURE YOUR HEAD TO CHOOSE THE CORRECT SIZE FOR A HAT
1. Get a tape measure and put it around your head.
2. Place it just above your ears where the hat is expected to sit
3. If you have a hat that fits well, put it on. Look and feel where it rests. Measure in that same spot. For most people, that just above the center of the forehead in front, and on the upper side of the “lump” in back.
4. The tape should be above the tops of your ears on both sides. Most people like their hats to rest about half an inch above the ears. Some prefer higher. Lower is likely to be a problem later. Be sure to measure in the place where you want your hat to rest. Check to make sure the tape is level all around. Pull the tape snug and see if it feels right. If not, try a little higher and a little lower until it feels just right.

We will ship your hat ROLLED in a generic white box (pictures), but to use it you will have to UNROLL your Hat and it will need to be re-shaped a little since the original shape will be distorted for being rolled.
