Recommendations before buying:

1. Do not expect miracles from the GPS. GPSs are NOT infallible. You must read the manual (download it from Garmin) so you know how to set it depending on your preferences.

I usually set the gps NOT to avoid: Toll roads, U Turns and other Avoidances. You can choose them in Tools, Settings, System, Avoidances. May be you want to check Dirt Roads to avoid them.

However, if you Reset or Restore to Factory Settings, the GPS set the factory defaults, that include, among other, avoid U-Turns, for example. You will not understand why the GPS is suggesting you make three right turns and a left, instead of a U-Turn!

2. The first time you use the gps in a new location, please go to an open space with "a clear view of the sky". This first time the gps needs to find more that the usual 3 satellites, and it will take several minutes. Just be patient, it's just the first time (it happens when you move several hundred kilometers from the last position).

3. If you drive in old towns where the streets are narrow (or for that matter in a place like New York downtown), the gps will react slowly, because the buildings will block the view of the satellites. It will miss turns!

4. "Where to" will not work here in the US if you try to find places in another country. You have to “Set location" first close to the address you want to enter. The gps tries to find places first close to its last location. Read the manual for instructions.

5. If you are using a generic charger, sometimes the gps falls into USB mode (the computer icon appears). In this case, disconnect it and connect it again quickly. You may have to repeat this. If that fails, wait until the "Loading maps" appears, then connect it. This must solve the problem.

6. In Tools, Settings, Map, Map Detail, select More or Most.

7. The gps has the choice, when planning a route, of "Fastest" or "Shortest". It seems that with the fastest it suggests long routes, just to get to an express way, for example. I suggest choosing the shortest. And always use your common sense. If it suggests going in the wrong direction, go for a few miles in the right direction until it "recalculates" the route again.

To view a city in the map:

1. Tap View Map.

2. Zoom out all the way to the end. (Tap the minus sign).

3. Drag the map towards the country you want.

4. Once over that country, zoom in over the city you want.

5. Continue zooming in and adjusting the part of the city you want.

6. In the end, you will see street level.

To “Set Location”:

  1. In Settings, System, set GPS Simulator to ON.

  2. Follow the instructions to view a city.

  3. Tap Set Location.

  4. Then you can search for hotels, restaurants (POIs) near that location.

Finally, Google nuvi (your model) and you will find tricks and hidden menus that could be helpful.
