This will allow you to remove all of the bad components first, (allowing easier repair and cleaning of the corroded area), and aid in getting the new components installed in their correct locations.
This is a Bally/Stern Pinball MPU Board Component Replacement Kit. This kit is good for MPU boards found in many of the Bally Pinball machines made from 1977 to 1985, as well as many Stern Pinball machines from 1977 to 1979. The components in this kit are NEW replacements for the parts on the MPU boards that are mostly affected by leakage from an old Nicad battery on the Bally -17 and -35 MPU boards, and the Stern MPU 100 boards. (Be assured, these parts are NEW from credible suppliers, they are NOT old stock, out of date, or closeout liquidated parts.) Look at your board. If you see any corrosion on your MPU board in the area outlined in red in the picture below, or the solder joints just aren’t bright and shiny any more, this kit's for you (Oh, and remove that battery quickly!!). Get rid of those green legged parts and replace them, as with this kit, you get fresh new parts to make that MPU run like new again. To some people, the toughest job is gathering the parts to repair their machines.
With this kit, the individual parts shopping from multiple suppliers has been done for you. The parts included in this kit are exact replacements (or equivalent) to the original parts on your MPU board.
You get these components from the Bally 2518-35 MPU parts list: C1, C5, C3, C13, C80, CR5, CR7, CR8, CR44, U8 (socket only), Q1, Q2, Q5, R1, R3, R11, R12, R16, R17, R28, R29, R107, R112, R134, R140, and VR1. These are the components outlined in red.

Many sources have written about how to replace the Nicad batteries on your Pinball MPU boards before (and many times after) they start leaking. You can either replace them with new Nicads, or with standard AA Alkaline batteries. Finding the battery holder locally, however, can be the difficult part. This kit is for locating the battery away from your pinball MPU board which will prevent your board from being damaged by corrosion from leaky NiCads.
This kit includes: a 3AA battery holder, diode, heat shrink tubing, and enough wire to locate the battery holder at least 2 feet from your MPU board. Just install the diode if you intend to use alkaline batteries. An instruction sheet is included to help you with proper hookup.
Special notes: Some knowledge of electronics is necessary for installation of the components in these kits, and some soldering is required. Manufacturers may vary, and Gerber Designs reserves the right to substitute equivalent parts as needed.

This video, available on DVD, is almost one hour in length and focuses on the repair and restoration of a corrosion damaged AS-2518-35 Bally Pinball MPU Board which was used in Bally Pinball machines from approximately 1977 to 1985. Whether you are an experienced technician, or a novice who has never soldered before, this video will help you get your corroded pinball MPU board running again.
The corrosion removal method used in this video is not your typical water/vinegar mixture method, as a matter of fact, it does not subject your circuit board to liquids at all. It is also not a bead blasting method. It is a simple process using a small power tool which will restore the circuit board traces to shiny copper allowing them to be tinned and protected for the remaining useful life of the circuit board. I have performed electronic repair for almost 30 years, and I have personally used each of these methods and have achieved the best result with this method, by far. I have boards over 20 years old, still in great shape from this method. You can do it, and you won’t be disappointed!
In addition to the specific repair information for the MPU board mentioned above, this video covers many techniques which may be helpful in other general PC board repairs that may be applied in the repair of other circuit boards used in various Pinball Machines, or other Video Games:
