THE INTERNATIONAL SANTA CLAUS COLLECTION SC12 GRANDFATHER FROST RUSSIA
This is SC12 Grandfather Frost of Russia that was issued in 1993 as part of The International Santa Claus Collection.
Grandfather Frost is the literal translation into English of the Russian name Ded Moroz (pronounced dead morose). He is accompanied in his gift-giving rounds by his granddaughter Snegurochka ("Snowmaiden").
Before the Communist revolution in 1917, Russians celebrated Christmas -- albeit in early January, as specified in the Julian calendar -- and St. Nicholas was the Christmas spirit of choice. Due to the suppression of religion during the Soviet regime the traditional gift-giving was shifted to New Year's Day and St. Nicholas was replaced with Grandfather Frost.
Thinner, more imperious and less given to ho-ho-ho's, Grandfather Frost has a close resemblance to that of Santa Claus, with his coat, boots, and long white beard. However, Grandfather Frost wears a heel-length fur coat, a semi-round fur hat, and white valenki or high boots (sapogi), silver or red with silver ornament. Unlike Santa Claus, he walks with a long magical staff and travels in a magical decorated a troika pulled by three horses rather than reindeer. Since horses do not fly, Grandfather Frost delivers presents by knocking on the door rather than plunging down chimneys and generally brings presents to the children in person.
The official residence of Grandfather Frost is the remote Russian forest town of Veliky Ustyug, some 500 miles northeast of the capital.
Depicted here in the customary blue robe with matching blue boots and a sack full of toys, to the golden top of his magical staff the figurine stands a full 4¾” high. His sack contains, as no surprise, a toy Russian bear along with other wrapped gifts.
