This impressively-sized and incredibly well-built wooden birdcage was handmade for a prison nurse by inmates at the Phillips State Prison in Buford, GA. A heavy squared structural frame holds dozens of wooden bars, each set into hand-drilled holes running through the framing brackets. It has a real glass-paned door with metal hinges and a wooden locking mechanism. a vertical pole perch stretches from the ceiling to the center of the linoleum tile floor. The piece measures 20"W x 18"D x 17.5"H. The roof cap is slightly larger. This piece was never used to house birds, but was used as a functional piece of furniture (a TV stand, to be precise). There are a few scuffs on the top of the cage from the aforementioned television, but is otherwise in exellent structural and cosmetic condition. It is very well-crafted with a simple and modern architectural style, and the tragic irony of prisoners building bird cages really makes this a true conversation piece.
