On offer here is a beautiful sculptural portrait of one of the famed Amarna princesses. Hand painted cosmetic details hint at a piece that was on the cusp of completion when it was among many pieces abandoned in the workshop of the sculptor Thutmose at the end of the reign of Akhenaten. The year 2012 marked the 100th anniversary of the discovery of the original bust and the many other treasures of the ancient workshop including the famous painted Nefertiti bust.

Akhenaten and Nefertiti had six daughters and several portrait busts similar to this example have been found at the modern site of El Amarna which was locality of the ancient city of Akhetaten.

These busts capture the rampant sensuality of line and form of the Amarna period sculpture, with exagerated features coupled with subtle, soft treatment of the facial details. Full lips, long necks and extended cranium are the stylistic traits of these stunning sculptures.

Composite statues were the fashion of the era thus the need for the heads to be carved separately as were torso and arms in different coloured stones. Tenons were used to secure the pieces together.

This piece is made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone and is coloured in a well developed ancient patina with a light polish. It has the distinctive look of age and is one of the most touchable pieces in the collection. This is why a removeable stand has been included so you may study with your sense of touch as well as your eyes.
